A major 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Izu Islands region on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at 03:22:16 UTC, at a depth of 424 km (264 mi).

60 major (6.0+) earthquakes hit various places over the last 80 days. Among these were nine 7.0+ and one 8.1 magnitude quakes!

A major 6.0 earthquake hit Izu Islands on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at 08:53:39 UTC, at a depth of 443 km (275.3 mi).  Two major (>5.9) earthquakes have hit in the last three days.  The graph below demonstrates just how much earthquake activity has climbed in the last year and a-half.
